A harrowing, bloody story of heroin addiction that puts films like Trainspotting to shame, Gringo mixes documentary footage with staged scenes to show the life of addict John Spacely.

Perhaps you've seen him somewhere and just can't remember his name. The face is about an enigmatic as they come: classic Roman features topped by a greasy dyed matt of slicked back blond hair, pirate-style patch covering his right eye and cigarette dangling from an ever-present smirk. Or maybe you've never really noticed him and could frankly care less who he is or was. To you, John Spacely is just another loser, a human being throwing their life away by indulging in the most shameless of self-satisfactions: drug abuse. The minute you learn he's a card-carrying member of the Riders of the White Horse, you're thoughts turn to how selfish and stupid he is, how addiction is for the weak and lazy. You now no longer wish to know anything about him, his life, or how he ended up strung out in New York City. Instead, you sneer down your self-righteous nose and blame him (and his kind) for all the problems of the world. Maybe it would help you to learn a little about who John Spacely is. Perhaps your perceptions will change when you learn what drove him to drugs and what he has to do on a daily basis to survive. One thing's for sure, the minute you see the horrifying docudrama Story of a Junkie, you will think twice about ever attempting to use drugs. This film is as successful a PSA warning about the terrors of dependency that you will probably ever see. It makes the Hollywood glamorization of such struggling souls that much more laughable.

Whereas Tinsel Town tripe likes to romanticize the ritualistic intake of mind and or mood altering substances as a photogenic character flaw, Story of a Junkie tells it like it really is. Never once white washing or trivializing the life of a heroin addict, director Lech Kowalski and his cast of real life drug users draw us directly into the warped urban war zone where the vast majority of pusher and partakers exist. Never cringing from the sights, the sounds, the smells and the surreality of the real drug culture, the desperation is palpable and the danger, predominant. From how fixes are "cut" to the hierarchy in a shooting gallery, you'll be hard pressed to find another film that tackles this terrible subject with more authenticity. It is drug abuse as slasher film, a frightening, sometime funny and often fatalistic representation of people living a life with a maniacal monkey on their back.

It's impossible for us non-addicts to understand the struggles and the will to survive (if only for the next score) of the person hopelessly obsessed with using. But for some reason, we are no longer a society that accepts brutal honesty. Everything needs to be sugarcoated with a small fraction of hope inserted to keep us feeling safe and secure. Frankly, the plain truth is all that Story of a Junkie has to offer. Without its integrity, its desire to get to the very heart of this corrupt cosmos, all we’d have is a carnival sideshow, a scandalous showcase of pure exploitation. But because of the tales it tells and the people who tell them, Story of a Junkie transcends its trappings to become a work of astounding power.

L’œuvre de Lech Kowalski, formé à l’Ecole d’Arts Visuels de New York, assistant de Shirley Clarke puis de Nam June Paik, accomplit l’idéal d’un cinéma populaire, c’est-à-dire par et pour le peuple, recueillant les manifestations emblématiques de l’énergie expressive en fusion que libèrent les colères, les désirs et les désespoirs contemporains. Son travail couvre trente ans d’histoire de la contre-culture, plusieurs continents et nombre des figures de la marginalité : musiciens, porn-stars, prostituées, junkies, mercenaires, sans-abris, clandestins, anciens prisonniers, tziganes… On y trouve même un cinéphile (Peter Scarlet en 2003, s’efforçant de ranimer le cinéma en Afghanistan). Commencée à l’écoute fraternelle des exorcismes punk (Johnny Thunders, les Ramones, les Sex Pistols), avec une brève mais splendide incursion dans l’émergence du hip hop (Breakdance Test), l’œuvre s’élargit progressivement aux situations et révoltes collectives pourvu qu’elles restent aussi rugueuses et spontanées que les prestations vocales d’un Joey Ramone à ses débuts. Lech Kowalski incarne en cinéma le mouvement punk : excitation maximale à la rencontre de singularités inassimilables qui obligeront le grand corps social inerte à se déplacer lentement, face à face extralucide avec la misère (sociale, mentale, sexuelle…), refus de la préservation de soi, foudroyante crudité stylistique, le trash comme résurrection critique du naturalisme. L’art non comme produit émouvant mais comme émeute productive. Cela nous vaut quelques films désormais fameux : D.0.A. (1981, sur la tournée des Sex Pistols aux Etats-Unis), On Hitler’s Highway (2002, rencontres de laissés pour compte au long d’une autoroute construite par les nazis et qui mène à Auschwitz), À l’Est du Paradis (2005, portrait de sa mère déportée en Sibérie et autoportrait de l’artiste en déviant américain) et bien d’autres classiques instantanés. Avec quelques complices, en 2008 Lech Kowalski crée l’entreprise Camera War, usage exemplaire des possibilités logistiques et esthétiques actuelles en matière de guérilla visuelle. La montée de l’activité, de la créativité et de la rébellion à laquelle nous avons assisté en 2008 et 2009 partout dans le monde est une part de la guerre en cours. La fabrique de la propagande et de la publicité ne fonctionne plus aussi bien qu’auparavant. Les corporations paniquent. Les peuples le sentent et s’agitent. Avec Fuck, pour le première fois en France, Lech Kowalski invite le musicien Mimetic et la VJ Emmanuelle Dorsaz à s’emparer de son travail pour une performance exceptionnelle. Fusion d’images du monde entier sur tous supports, et sons électro.

Lech Kowalski with image mixer Emmanuelle Dorsaz and composer Mimetic present FUCK, a live cinema event that merges his images filmed around the world with electronic sounds. Fuck opens for Kowalski new dimensions in cinema, still unexplored. Known for having filmed with underground rock musicians, Kowalski maintains a symbiotic relationship with music. It is therefore natural that the idea of a live event interweaving images, sound and live performance grew. As an engaged filmmaker, provocation is a way for him to highlight the inconsistencies of the contemporary world. From the United States to Afghanistan, France to Argentina, Poland to Mexico, it's a chaotic world that emerges. Images filmed in a variety of formats, broadcast cameras to cell phones, clash against each other and the music performed live ranges from dark industrial electro to the post techno.

Kowalski's accomplices on this project, the composer Jerome Soudan aka Mimetic builds with the help of image mixer Emmanuelle Dorsaz a narrative of raw emotion, where eclectic sounds and multi-screen images echo a carnal approach to social issues and current economic realities.

Wondering if there is a relationship between the images he filmed over many years for many different documentaries, Kowalski searched his archive (raw unedited footage he filmed since Sept. 11, 2001), selected scenes, deconstructed them into shots, short loops and sequences, stripped away the context the material was originally intended for, reduced everything to the most essential images, and worked with Dorasz and Mimetic to add a musical component; a live mix of not only the music but also of the visuals, onto three screens. There are many narrative possibilities because images on each of the three screens are individually controlled and the forward momentum to the story has left and right movement too. While each sequence is a cinematic haiku, they accumulate and present something which is undeniably a film but not in the traditional sense.

As Mimetic performs his composition and Dorsaz mixes sequences, they not only interact with each other, they "intuit" the audience reactions to the performance. This brings visceral tension to the performance thus the audience plays a subtle but important role in the creative process. Every screening is unique, each time Kowalski adds, takes away and/or rearranges scenes, yet the essentials are the same; an experiment, creating the perfect arrangement of picture and sound.

Connu pour avoir filmé avec talent le rock underground, Lech Kowalski entretient avec la musique un rapport fusionnel. C’est donc naturellement que l’idée d’un événement live, une performance entrelaçant images, son et spectacle vivant a germé. Fuck ouvre pour Lech Kowalski de nouvelles dimensions pour le cinéma, encore inexplorées. Cinéaste militant, la provocation est pour lui un moyen de pointer les incohérences du monde contemporain. Des Etats-Unis à l’Afghanistan, de la France à l’Argentine, c’est donc un monde chaotique qui se dessine, entrechoc d’images de qualité broadcast et de caméras de poche, sur une improvisation musicale jouée en direct, entre la techno la plus sombre et l’électro industrielle. Lech Kowalski’s 2003 documentary feature about the life and times of Ramones bassist and all-star burnout Dee Dee Ramone (1952-2002) is a fascinating character study of a punk rock legend. In 1992, Dee Dee Ramone met with director Lech Kowalski to discuss Johnny Thunders for the film Born to Lose (the last rock and roll movie). The session took on a life of its own as Dee Dee transformed into a punk Lenny Bruce and recounted his most poignant memories of copping drugs, forming bands, losing friends and lovers and getting tattoos. Relive the battlefield history of rock n’roll though the memories of this ordinary yet extraordinary guy from Queens whose songs distilled frustration, humor and pleasure into the energetic melodies that made the Ramones a worldwide influence.
C'est en 1974 à New York que se forme l'un des groupes mythiques de la scène punk-rock, les Ramones. Avec leurs jeans déchirés, leurs blousons en cuir noir et leurs riffs insistants, ils furent les pionniers du mouvement, et lui gagnèrent ses lettres de noblesse. En 1989, Dee Dee Ramone, bassiste du groupe et l'un de ses membres fondateurs, quitte les Ramones et se lance dans une carrière solo, avant de les retrouver brièvement à la fin des années 90. Dans Hey Is Dee Dee Home, Lech Kowalski réalise une interview de celui qui composa les plus grands morceaux des Ramones. Filmé en plans fixes, assis seul au milieu des ténèbres, la vulnérabilité de cette figure légendaire du rock est encore accentuée par un éclairage qui creuse les traits de son visage. Dee Dee nous livre les démons d'une vie faite d'extrêmes, et dresse le portrait de l'univers de la punk, très sex, drug and rock'n'roll. A travers le catalogue de ses nombreux tatouages, chacun relié à un événement marquant, il revient sur sa carrière, ses amis musiciens, son naufrage dans la drogue et ses tentatives pour en sortir. A la fin de l'interview, les applaudissements de l'équipe de tournage sortent Dee Dee de sa solitude et le ramènent parmi les vivants. Lech Kowalski takes an intimate behind-closed-doors approach: the first shot, Cutie's face, Walter's face, the first kiss. Walter, an elderly potbellied man, welcomes this young nineteen-year-old woman for a night of paid love. He is an important figure of the New York art world, a painter and patron of the arts, who financed Pull My Daisy by Robert Frank. Their games of seduction are charming, the ritual of the purification of Cutie's body is gracious. Their dance prolongs into a striptease, then an adolescent embrace on the carpet. And when the young nymph comes out of the bath, Walter venerates her on bended knee. The gestures of the lovers are filled with a cajoling insouciance and their conversation is in full swing. She evokes the pornographic films that employ her and the friendly sex she sometimes shares with women. Then suddenly, Lech Kowalski joins in the conversation, asks questions about the reasons for the popularity of pornographic films. We never see the filmmaker on-screen, apart from his hand giving Cutie a cigarette and lighting it in a gentlemanly fashion. It is he who organized this meeting and paid 150 dollars for the young woman to be present.
Walter and Cutie ends with the Edenic tableau of the couple lying on a bed upon which fruit, no longer forbidden, are laid out. Walter has snuggled his head up against Cutie's breast in childlike abandon. Their pleasurable chance encounter is shared devoid of any sense of guilt.
C'est à un huis clos intimiste que Lech Kowalski nous convie sur Ie mode stylistique du cinéma direct. Premier plan: Ie visage de Cutie, celui de Walter, un premier baiser. Walter, vieux monsieur ventripotent, accueille cette jeune femme de dix-neuf ans pour une nuit d'amour tarifée. Il est une personnalité new yorkaise, spécialiste du marché de I'art, peintre et mécène, qui finança Pull My Daisy de Robert Frank. Leurs jeux de séduction sont charmants, Ie rituel de purification du corps de Cutie gracieux. Leur danse se prolonge en un strip-tease, puis en une étreinte adolescente sur Ie tapis. Et quand la jeune nymphe sort du bain, c'est genou à terre que Walter la vénère. Les gestes des amants sont empreints d'une insouciance enjôleuse et leur conversation va bon train. Elle évoque les films pornographiques qui I'emploient ou la sexualité amicale qu'elle partage parfois avec des femmes. Puis soudain, Lech Kowalski se mêle à la conversation, pose des questions sur les raisons du succès populaire des films pornographiques. On ne verra jamais Ie réalisateur à I'image, sinon sa main qui offre une cigarette à Cutie et qui la lui allume en homme de bonne éducation. Car c'est bien lui qui a organisé cette rencontre et qui paya 150 dollars la présence de la jeune femme. Walter and Cutie s'achève sur Ie tableau édénique du couple allongé sur un lit où sont posés des fruits qui ne sont plus défendus. Walter a blotti sa tête sur Ie sein de Cutie dans un abandon enfantin. Leur rencontre de fortune et de plaisir est partagée hors de tout sentiment de culpabilité.

Lech Kowalski, dépasser les bornes

Actif depuis la fin des années 1970, Lech Kowalski tisse une œuvre documentaire forte et indépendante, encore trop peu vue. La Cinémathèque propose une sélection de huit de ses films. Qu’ils explorent la marginalité et la marginalisation à New York (Gringo, Story of a Junkie, Rock Soup, Chico and the People), la scène punk (D. O. A.: A Right of Passage, Born to Lose, the Last Rock and Roll Movie, Hey is Dee Dee Home) ou, à la frontière de l’histoire et de l’autobiographie, la Pologne contemporaine (The Boot Factory, On Hitler’s Highway, East of Paradise), ils témoignent de l’amour du cinéaste pour les destins hors normes, et un cinéma libre de toute contrainte morale ou esthétique.

Mis à part Gringo peut-être, votre cinéma est documentaire. La mise en scène et la composition de l’image y sont très importantes. Pourquoi ce choix du documentaire et que signifient pour vous les oppositions fiction / documentaire, mise en scène / spontanéité ?

Chaque film retrace mon propre processus de découverte. La découverte de quelque chose dont je ne sais rien, au lieu de découvrir quelque chose que les gens pensent que je vais montrer. Que ce soient des émotions, des gens ou des situations, la position de la caméra est plus importante que n’importe quel autre élément dans un film. Bien sûr, la juxtaposition de scènes constitue l’histoire d’un film mais l’endroit où je place ma caméra reste la question la plus importante pour moi. Cela indique ma relation avec le sujet et avec moi-même. C’est ce qui m’angoisse le plus quand je filme. Ai-je pris la bonne décision ? Le hors-champ, c’est-à-dire montrer aussi peu que possible de ce qui se passe, est d’une grande importance pour moi. Je m’intéresse uniquement à l’interprétation de ce que je vois, et pas à la documentation de son intégralité. C’est pourquoi il m’est si difficile de travailler avec un opérateur caméra. Il ne s’agit pas de mauvaise ou bonne photographie mais de ma relation à l’instant qui est filmé. C’est cette relation à l’instant que j’étudie plus tard avec attention. Au moment du montage, lorsque j’organise les images en une histoire dotée d’une progression narrative, je décris également ma relation à ce que j’ai filmé. L’objectivité ne m’intéresse absolument pas. Je m’intéresse à l’excitation du moment. Comment un instant peut-il me parler de la vie au lieu de me fournir les éléments d’une intrigue ? L’intrigue est secondaire. Elle est essentielle pour que le public entre dans l’histoire, mais il existe toutes sortes d’intrigues. L’intrigue de ce qui va se passer ensuite ne m’intéresse pas. Où va-t-on ? Quelle est la connexion avec l’honnêteté par opposition à l’intrigue générale ? C’est pour cela que je construis mes histoires autour d’instants qui conduisent à l’instant suivant. Et, au final, je veux être émotionnellement satisfait du voyage mais pas uniquement à cause de la quantité d’informations véhiculées.

Plusieurs de vos films ont une dimension provocatrice, soit par leur sujet (drogue, marginalité, sexualité), soit par la façon dont ils ébranlent notre perception de ces réalités. Ils sont parfois perçus comme choquants, le plus souvent comme libres de tout jugement moral. Quelle est votre vision de l’éthique documentaire ?

Le politiquement correct ne m’intéresse pas. Sa valeur historique est très limitée. Les personnages marginaux sont plus proches de la réalité. Ils sont plus proches de leur perte. Les gens qui sont aux commandes de leur vie paient le prix fort. Le prix de perdre leur plus grande raison de vivre. Pour vivre, il faut risquer la mort. La mort a plusieurs aspects. La plupart des gens sont des morts-vivants. Ils vivent confinés dans leurs petites histoires. Tous les marginaux ne sont pas des héros mais, me frotter à eux me procure un vif plaisir. Ils me font réaliser que la vie vaut la peine d’être vécue… si on la vit. C’est de ce défi dont je veux parler dans mes films.
L’évaluation de la qualité d’un film est la manière dont il est perçu dans le futur. Je ne sais pas pourquoi mais j’ai toujours eu ça en tête en faisant des films. Dès mes premiers films. Les situations changent mais notre temps reste notre temps et, c’est autour de ce concept que je me bats. Pourquoi les choses sont telles qu’elles sont à mon époque ? C’est une question extrêmement complexe à laquelle je ne peux répondre. Ça me semble au-delà de mes capacités intellectuelles mais, peut-être que mes films, eux, y répondent. En tout cas, c’est mon pari.

De D.O.A. à Born to Lose, en passant par Hey is Dee Dee Home, la musique joue un rôle important dans vos films. Que signifient pour vous la musique et l’esthétique punk ?

Je ne filme que des histoires musicales avec lesquelles je suis connecté d’une manière esthétique. Le mouvement punk est une manière de penser. S’il n’avait jamais été inventé, je travaillerais quand même d’une manière punk. Ce n’est pas une approche philosophique, c’est une manière de survivre et par survivre, je veux dire de faire en sorte que les choses marchent pour toi plutôt que de t’intégrer. Tu crées un espace. Plus je travaille et plus cet espace s’élargit. Je me souviens lorsqu’il n’y avait pas d’espace du tout. Et maintenant, après toutes ces années, l’espace contient une œuvre mais, je pense que je n’y suis pas toujours. L’espace, ce n’est pas moi, c’est autre chose. Le travail lui-même constitue l’espace et je suis le visiteur intime de cet espace.

Votre plus récent projet, Camera War, est un blogue cinématographique (www.camerawar.tv). Vous y écrivez que la réalisation cinématographique traditionnelle ne peut plus exprimer la complexité de notre monde. Pensez-vous qu’Internet soit la solution ?

Camera War est ma façon de me connecter à un monde qui se situe bien au-delà de la compréhension. C’est mon seul défi […] Nous vivons dans une réalité post-documentaire, ce qui signifie que nous ne vivons plus dans un monde où il y a une possibilité d’explication. Nous sommes suspendus dans la réalité […] Camera War, c’est mon action. Cette action me fait découvrir des histoires que je veux raconter et auxquelles je n’aurais pas pensé si je n’avais été porté vers l’avant par Camera War. Camera War est ma communauté. C’est peut être la seule réalité post-documentaire dont je peux parler. Communauté. Il n’y a pas de communauté dans le sens traditionnel. J’ai donc créé un endroit où une communauté peut se retrouver […] Il s’agit d’imagination et de créativité […] Donner plutôt que détruire, ouvrir plutôt que fermer, donner de l’énergie, montrer des choses qui ne sont pas si évidentes et faire tout ça parce que les grosses boîtes à fric ignorent toutes ces choses.

A harrowing, bloody story of heroin addiction that puts films like Trainspotting to shame, Gringo mixes documentary footage with staged scenes to show the life of addict John Spacely.

Perhaps you've seen him somewhere and just can't remember his name. The face is about an enigmatic as they come: classic Roman features topped by a greasy dyed matt of slicked back blond hair, pirate-style patch covering his right eye and cigarette dangling from an ever-present smirk. Or maybe you've never really noticed him and could frankly care less who he is or was. To you, John Spacely is just another loser, a human being throwing their life away by indulging in the most shameless of self-satisfactions: drug abuse. The minute you learn he's a card-carrying member of the Riders of the White Horse, you're thoughts turn to how selfish and stupid he is, how addiction is for the weak and lazy. You now no longer wish to know anything about him, his life, or how he ended up strung out in New York City. Instead, you sneer down your self-righteous nose and blame him (and his kind) for all the problems of the world. Maybe it would help you to learn a little about who John Spacely is. Perhaps your perceptions will change when you learn what drove him to drugs and what he has to do on a daily basis to survive. One thing's for sure, the minute you see the horrifying docudrama Story of a Junkie, you will think twice about ever attempting to use drugs. This film is as successful a PSA warning about the terrors of dependency that you will probably ever see. It makes the Hollywood glamorization of such struggling souls that much more laughable.

GRINGO Story of a Junkie is about as close to pure European neo-realism as an American movie is ever likely to get. It is also a stunning example of the cinema vérité style of filmmaking, the capturing of events as they happen without concern about continuity or performance. Part documentary, part confessional, this occasionally brilliant but always brave movie is an incredibly searing indictment on the use and abuse of drugs.
Whereas Tinsel Town tripe likes to romanticize the ritualistic intake of mind and or mood altering substances as a photogenic character flaw, Story of a Junkie tells it like it really is. Never once white washing or trivializing the life of a heroin addict, director Lech Kowalski and his cast of real life drug users draw us directly into the warped urban war zone where the vast majority of pusher and partakers exist. Never cringing from the sights, the sounds, the smells and the surreality of the real drug culture, the desperation is palpable and the danger, predominant. From how fixes are "cut" to the hierarchy in a shooting gallery, you'll be hard pressed to find another film that tackles this terrible subject with more authenticity. It is drug abuse as slasher film, a frightening, sometime funny and often fatalistic representation of people living a life with a maniacal monkey on their back.

Rien ne nous est épargné! Doublure de Johnny Thunders -trop compliqué à gérer selon le réalisateur - John Spacely, jeune homme borgne à la chevelure peroxydée, est le guide de ce voyage errant parmi les toxicomanes et les dealers. Toujours à la recherche d'un nouveau shoot, au rythme de musique hip hop, il nous entraîne dans les sombres bas-fonds du Lower East Side à New York. C'est là, dans une pièce située au rez-de-chaussée avec fenêtre sur rue, que les dealers préparent les petits sachets tant attendus, que les toxicomanes se retrouvent, jamais à l'abri d'un nouvel acte de violence. Mélange étonnant de scènes authentiques et de reconstitu-tions, annotées par la voix-off de John, Gringo - The Story of a Junkie regarde la réalité en face: celle d'une société en révolte, en fuite et menacée par le sida. Véritable drame dont la sponta-néité n'est pas sans rappeler le cinéma-vérité, ce film au regard impassible comme anesthésié par le désespoir, est une vérita-ble chronique d'une mort annoncée... survenue finalement dans Born to Lose où John Spacely se meurt devant la caméra, comme s'il ne pouvait échapper à son rôle d'éternelle doublure de Johnny Thunders.

Chico and the People is a video film about the of the recording of the sound track for the film Rock Soup. Lech Kowalski asked Chico Freeman to compose a sound track for his film about the homeless in New York. The objective was to make a sound that did not feel just like a musical score. He asked Chico Freeman and three musicians to record live with a group of homeless people. The music was recorded on a cold January afternoon in Tompkins Square park on the lower east side in New York. This park was a key meeting point for hundreds of homeless people living on the streets of New York City. Several days after the recording session, the park was closed for several months and redesigned for easier access by the police. This film is a record of that recording session and about a part of New York that no longer exists.

"Breakdance Test is probably one of the first films dedicated to this phenomenon. At the beginning of the 80s in New York, there was disco music, punk rock, jazz, and rap was beginning to become known. I wanted to make a film about musical movements that were on the rise during this period. I would meet with several young people, put two 16mm cameras in a studio, and I would try to grasp the new body movements that these kids were making. I wanted to see if I could make something good out of it, so I considered the film as a test, a 'breakdance. test.' Rap and breakdance were both part of the street culture, but had nothing to do with my culture: it was too young a movement for me and I considered it somewhat annoying. The film is the fruit of my infatuation with pop culture, but if we think about it, is not my culture: I wanted to make a film about something that interested me..."

Autant de questions que se pose Lech Kowalski et qui l’ont amené à réinventer l’écriture et la diffusion de ses films. Armé de sa caméra, l’artiste sillonne le monde et revisite ses propres images d’archives pour proposer une nouvelle forme de cinéma documentaire via le site "www.camerawar.tv"
Chaque lundi, depuis le 29 septembre 2008, le réalisateur anglais d’origine polonaise met en ligne des films-chapitres de durées variables. Ceux-ci rendent compte de sa vision du monde d’aujourd’hui, en contrepoint de réalités similaires existant depuis une trentaine d’années.

Conceptualisé par la société de webdesign Elephant, le sit est associé à un blog rédigé par le réalisateur. Le public est invité à y laisser un commentaire, à soumettre son propre film ou un morceau de musique de sa composition. Chaque film peut se voir indépendamment des autres, mais l’ensemble est lié, formant indéniablement un récit – lien renforcé par la présence sonore commune des créations de Mimetic.
Pendant sa résidence au CENTQUATRE, l’artiste monte puis met en ligne ses « films-chapitres » et répond aux commentaires et interventions des "inter-spectateurs/acteurs". Il présentera périodiquement au public son travail au sein du CENTQUATRE.

On September 29th a new kind of documentary is launched on the Internet and for one year, every Monday, new film chapters of varying lengths, will be posted online.

Every film chapter, in and of itself, is a short documentary but when viewed together, whether chronologically or in arbitrary sequences, tell a story. They can be viewed in any order. These are not viral videos or news reports. This is a new cinema narrative technique and the Internet is the only way to tell this story. This presents a new way to watch a film.

This is a new kind of cinema in a new venue, a cinema free of television and corporate production restraints. It rips away the walls corporations have erected between the audience and artists, an experimental cinema, sorely lacking in the new world order, accessible outside of traditional venues and television.

Director Lech Kowalski blogs about each chapter and the audience can interact with comments or submit films and music of their own. Jerome Soudan from Mimetic is the musical composer for the documentary. Web designer Jerome Pidoux, known as Elephant has designed the site. Chapters can be viewed full screen, smaller image or with a black border. Headsets or external speakers connected to the computer will produce optimum sound quality.

Filmed in '78 as it happened, when it happened, like it happened, DOA is the legendary and definitive document of the punk generation seen through the demise of The Sex Pistols whilst on their ill-fated US tour which saw both the break-up of the band and the death of Sid Vicious.
Loaded with explosive performances from the prime movers of movement including The Sex Pistols (doing Anarchy In The U.K, God Save The Queen, No Fun, Pretty Vacant, Holidays In The Sun and heaps more), X Ray Specs (with their incendiary classic Oh Bondage Up Yours), The Rich Kids, Generation X, Sham 69, The Dead Boys and tons more, the film really captures something in that classic establishment versus angry youth way.
DOA is more than just a mirror to the scene, it is as much part of the movement as the music itself...chaotic, claustrophobic, nasty and aimed squarely between your eyes.

Un baptême, un 45 tours posé sur une platine, un cri d'enfant libératoire et une touche power qui enclenche «Night clubbing» d'Iggy Pop, et déjà une mort est annoncée à l'arrivée. Dans DOA, film désormais de référence en la matière et fondé essen-tiellement sur l'unique tournée des Sex Pistols aux États-Unis en 1978, Lech Kowalski pose un regard à la fois fasciné et désabusé sur le mouvement punk. Détracteurs, fans et suiveurs, tous sont conviés pour cet enterrement prématuré. Et les cada-vres sont nombreux. Ceux d'abord bien réels du bassiste des Sex Pistols, Sid Vicious et de son amie Nancy, décédés tous deux d'une overdose. Et d'autres plus symboliques: celui des Sex Pistols, dissous à la suite d'une tournée de plus en plus violente et chaotique; celui du mouvement lui-même, qui à force d'édulcoration et de marchandisation a perdu sa raison d'être. Car même si des groupes tels que Génération X, XRay-Spex ou Sham 69 ont pris une légitime relève, des suiveurs incarnés ici par Terry, un jeune punk anglais, finiront par tuer la révolte musicale. Ce constat amer, qui préfigure les thématiques déve-loppées plus tard par Kowalski (drogues, échec face à l'auto-rité, etc.), ne rejette pourtant en aucun cas le punk dans une vanité morbide, L’excitation, la possibilité d'une alternative sont ici exaltées par des images d'adolescents revenus à la vie et par une esthétique brutale, sans concession, allergique à tout canon de beauté et d'une séduisante impureté. Camera war will be presented at CPH DOX in Redefining Documentary, Working Multi-Platform

Questioning cinema and the film business and its ability to reach and communicate with audiences, the American undergrounds answer to Werner Herzog, cult figure Lech Kowalski has turned to the internet. Renowned for his controversial award winning documentaries, a journalist once called Kowalski a warrior battling with a camera to redefine the art of documentary. Kowalski has now taken his battle online with www.camerawar.tv.
Launched on September 29th, camerawar.tv is a new kind of documentary where Kowalski will post a new film chapter each Monday for a year. Every chapter is a short documentary in and of itself. When viewed together, whether chronologically or in arbitrary sequences, the chapters tell a story. They can be viewed in any order and express a new cinematic narrative. This is a new kind of cinema in a new venue. A cinema free of television and corporate production restraints, through which Kowalski seeks to rip away the walls between audiences and artists. Little-known in France, where East of Paradise was discovered at the International Festival of Documentary in Marseille (FID Marseille) 2006, Lech Kowalski is a star of American underground cinema. “All my films, he says, were shot to create a space for me in the world. I wasn’t finding my place and cinema helped build my reality, forge a world that corresponded to me.” In fact, few contemporary bodies of work like Kowalski’s give such a strong impression of vital necessity, of body and soul commitment in a world that he is not content to visit and film but into which he throws, searches and finds himself. World of outskirts and the subterranean of the West, for a long time the ones of the Lower East Side in New York where Lech Kowalski, born in London to Polish parents, settles in the early seventies. Going with the Sex Pistols on their cataclysmic Unites States tour (D.O.A, 1981), accompanying the suicidal drifting of a junky (Gringo, 1984), or the survival struggle of the New York homeless (Rock Soup, 1991), Lech Kowalski celebrated the end of a generation, of an era and energy: the one of punk, last battle and swan’s song of rebellion, of a lifestyle that paid with the price of self destruction its desperate desire for freedom in regard to all authorities.
Last part of a trilogy through which Kowalski comes back to his Polish roots, East of Paradise is to this day the central piece of his work, an attempt to make account of a life committed to this world, to this era, and weigh its meaning and its inheritance. This meaning, Kowalski builds by articulating two movements whose bringing together had, for some, incited the same stupid indignation than that, dared by Duras and Resnais in their time, of Hiroshima’s destruction and the intimate drama of a young French woman. First movement: the filmmaker’s mother tells her son for the first time the great sufferings during her deportation by the soviets during the Second World War. Second movement: Kowalski tells his life as filmmaker in a New York of drugs, porn and punk, over an edit of fragments and never used rushes from his films. The mothers monologue counts, with those of Shoah, A Dirty Story, or the recent Fengming: A Chinese Memoir by Wang Bing, among the most poignant oral accounts in the history of cinema. Kowalski’s standpoint is opposite to the rigorous austerity of the previous films. His cinema is free of rules, systems, or moderations, he has no fear to cut up, to dramatize the account by framing his mothers face tighter and tighter, up to the mime, in the broken down empty apartment chosen as back drop, of such detail of past events: blackness to recall the obscurity in the train of the deportation, back to image when light enters back the freight car. Distance, propriety, all the common meeting grounds of the so-called ethics of documentary are swept by the empathetic commitment of the filmmaker in the here and now of the filming. The account overwhelms his mother who is stunned by the strength of the images her speech uncovered. Kowalski takes over, starts in the first person the story of his life, his mothers face in tears giving frame to the daily gestures of a junkie preparing his morning shoot accompanied by a casual jazz. If bringing together big history and the little story, the mothers prestigious and universal drama and the son’s drifting in the subterranean of sex, drugs and rock was a shock to some, it’s because Kowalski took care not to justify it straightaway, to let wide open the split of the times and events. Terrific audaciousness, gripping spectator experience: the split fills itself, the archives of the lost generation progressively charge with a painful solemnity, until appear under the faces of New York’s “victims and heroes” those of the Polish deportees. History lesson, act of memory, self-portrait, musical poem, libertarian manifesto, requiem: East of Paradise opens wide the window of documentary.

On September 29th a new kind of documentary is launched on the Internet and for one year, every Monday, new film chapters of varying lengths, will be posted online.

Every film chapter, in and of itself, is a short documentary but when viewed together, whether chronologically or in arbitrary sequences, tell a story. They can be viewed in any order. These are not viral videos or news reports. This is a new cinema narrative technique and the Internet is the only way to tell this story. This presents a new way to watch a film.

This is a new kind of cinema in a new venue, a cinema free of television and corporate production restraints. It rips away the walls corporations have erected between the audience and artists, an experimental cinema, sorely lacking in the new world order, accessible outside of traditional venues and television.

Director Lech Kowalski blogs about each chapter and the audience can interact with comments or submit films and music of their own. Jerome Soudan from Mimetic is the musical composer for the documentary. Web designer Jerome Pidoux, known as Elephant has designed the site. Chapters can be viewed full screen, smaller image or with a black border. Headsets or external speakers connected to the computer will produce optimum sound quality.

Director Lech Kowalski is a cult figure in underground cinema. Renowned for his controversial award-winning documentaries a journalist once called him "a warrior battling with a camera to redefine the art of documentary" Born in London to Polish immigrants who fled Russian concentration camps, Kowalski grew up in nomadic displacement in the United States. He began his carrier in the 70's in New York. His impressive array of documentaries have garnered critical praise and awards such as the Jury Award for East of Paradise at Venice film festival in 2005, the Special Jury Award for On Hitler's Highway at the 2002 Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival, and the Golden Gate Award for Rock Soup at the 1992 San Francisco International Film Festival. His seminal film, DOA (1980), is a punk escapade that follows the Sex Pistols tour of the USA.

Le 29 septembre, je proposerai sur internet une nouvelle forme de documentaire. Tous les lundis, pendant un an, je mettrai en ligne de nouveaux « films chapitres » de longueur différente. Chacun de ces « films chapitres » sera un court documentaire en soi. Visionnés avec d’autres, de façon chronologique ou arbitraire, ils formeront une histoire. Ils seront aussi liés par la présence sonore commune des créations de Mimetic. Il ne s’agira ni de vidéos virales, ni de vidéos d’actualités, mais d’une nouvelle forme de narration et de visionnage filmiques que seul l’internet rend possible.

camerawar.tv propose une nouvelle forme de cinéma grâce à un outil de diffusion innovant. Un cinéma libéré des chaînes de télévision et des restrictions que subit aujourd’hui la production industrielle ; un cinéma qui détruit les murs érigés par les industriels entre le public et les artistes ; un cinéma expérimental qui manque cruellement dans le nouvel ordre mondial, qui s’affranchit des lieux de diffusion traditionnelle.

Chaque film chapitre sera assorti d’un blog sur lequel le public sera invité à réagir en envoyant des commentaires, des vidéos, des photos, des sons.

Un soin particulier a été apporté à la technicité du site (créé par Elephant – webdesigner Jérôme Pidoux), tant au niveau visuel (lecture possible en plein écran) que sonore.

Né à Londres de parents polonais, Lech Kowalski a grandi aux Etats-Unis. Il débute sa carrière à New-York dans les années soixante-dix avec l’artiste Nam June Paik et la cinéaste Shirley Clarke. Témoin essentiel de l’essor du mouvement punk, il signe en 1981 D.O.A. : A Rite of passage, film culte sur la tournée des Sex Pistols aux États-Unis. Il consacre ensuite son travail au devenir des musiciens de la scène punk (Born To Lose ; Hey is Dee Dee Home), aux junkies du Lower East Side (Gringo, Story of a Junkie) et aux sans-abri (Rock Soup). De retour en Europe, il conçoit une trilogie intitulée The Fabulous Art of Surviving dont le dernier opus, East of Paradise, a été primé à Venise en 2005.

Lech Kowalski has officially become a menber of the Food and film academy.

The Slow Food movement, which defends the biodiversity of food and agriculture with initiatives that support and enhance the quality of small productions in danger of extinction, wants to open itself to new forms of communication. This year it has given birth to an international festival of film and food called Slow Food on Film, which will take place in Bologna Italy from 7th to 11th May, with the collaboration of Bologna’s Film Library

There will be competitions, retrospectives, special events and gastronomic moments, but Slow Food on Film wants to be more than a simple thematic festival for food and film experts. It is eager to set itself as a laboratory of ideas on audiovisual communication of gastronomy, an international experience of reflection and comparison.

their aim is to promote and stimulate a new critical awareness in the food culture by showing films, shorts, documentaries and even TV series that develop an original perspective on food (deep feelings, frames of mind, sense of belonging), on the problematic issues of food and agriculture (economic, social and environmental effects) and on gastronomic memory as a heritage to preserve. The festival wants to give voice and space to this bright production – fiction and documentary – that really aims to reflect constructively on the primary gesture of our lives: eating.

they have decided to establish an international network of friends of the festival, made up of people who, in their professional life, have shown an interest in both film and food, and who intend to help Slow Food on Film grow in the best ways possible.

They have named this “network” the FOOD & FILM ACADEMY. Lech Kowalski is one of the member of this network. So he will recommend the titles of films, documentaries, and short TV series for the festiva and Vote for the best of 5 feature films of fiction in the category Best Food Feature

What Happened in New Orleans

"In 1991 Johnny Thunders went to New Orleans. It's not sure why. Did he plan to move there? Was he interested in recording new music? Did he want to write new material? Was he planning to meet friends who live there? Before he left for New Orleans, Thunders listened to songs recorded by Willy DeVille. He checked into a hotel in the French Quarter located right next to where DeVille lived. Less than 24 hours later he was found dead in his hotel room and to this day the police have not solved the mystery of his death. But many characters from the French Quarter have something to say about what happened to Thunders on June 21, 1991."

"I started to make this film with Johnny Thunders in 1982. The first scene we filmed was inspired by a picture of Christ on his way to be crucified. We used passages from the bible as the script and filmed Thunders in the basement of a dingy transient hotel on East 22 Second Street. Later, I filmed Thunders performing at the Mudd club in downtown New York. After filming several more scenes, Thunders and his manager had to suddenly flee the city. His manager was somehow implicated in someone's death and Thunders moved to Europe. The film footage was stored in a laboratory vault. Many years later most of the labs in New York closed and some of the material was lost. Stations of the Cross Unfinished film was finally completed with the material I managed to save. "

Chronique d'une mort annoncée : les films rock de Lech Kowalski

Automne 1977. New York ne s'émeut guère du raz-de-marée punk qui affole
l'Angleterre. Parce que c'est ici qu'il est né en tant que musique - New York Dolls en 1972, Ramones en 1974 -, parce que la charge politique n'y prend pas la forme d'une violence médiatique, mais structure l'existence et l'art d'un monde souterrain autonome. Né à Londres de parents polonais, installé à New York en 1971, Lech Kowalski est en 1977 un acteur et témoin important de l'underground new-yorkais. Sous l'influence de Shirley Clarke et Tom Reichman, il a réalisé une série de films dans et sur l'industrie du porno, que vient de Clore son premier long métrage, Sex Stars. Lorsqu'il part à l'hiver 1977 sur les traces des Sex Pistols en tournée américaine, Kowalski ne fait que prolonger son immersion dans un milieu qu'il a fait sien depuis son adolescence : une sous culture où se mêlent le rock, la drogue et le sexe.

Dead On Arrival: en 1981, le punk est mort depuis longtemps, mais c'est manquer la beauté singulière du film que de n'y voir que la chronique d'une désintégration. Après vingt ans de liquidation via Thatcher et Blair, il apparaît comme l'émouvante élégie d'une certaine Angleterre. Les Sex Pistols ne sont que le symptôme spectaculaire d'une ultime décharge d'énergie populaire, dont D.O.A. compose un tableau éclaté et précis. Comme dans tous ses films, Kowalski néglige le bon goût et les prescriptions esthético-morales du documentaire pour sculpter sa matière hétérogène avec un génie musical du montage. Il ne craint pas le clip et prouve que cette forme peut atteindre à la plus haute efficacité descriptive - Breakdance Test. Parmi les nombreux clips enchaînés dans D.O.A. au son des Pistols, The Clash, Sham 69 ou des merveilleux X-ray Spex, celui de God Save the Queen condense en deux minutes le présent et l'avenir de l'Angleterre : claire promesse et sombre prophétie d'une foule d'enfants blancs et noirs sautillant et riant sur le "no future" des Pistols.

Loin de se limiter au genre "documentaire musical ", la série des films rock de Lech Kowalski compose la précieuse archive d'un monde disparu : l'underground new-yorkais. C'est avant tout sur les visages, que Kowalski saisit l'éclat et l'ombre d'un présent promis au néant. Visages anonymes qui gravitent autour de celui de Johnny Thunders et des autres stars underground de Born to Lose (2001). The Last Rock and Roll Movie : le film porte bien son sous-titre. Parce que le leader des Heartbreakers reste l'ultime icône rock, petite frappe flamboyante et junkie suicidaire, parce que le montage de Kowalski chauffe d'une même flamme ses captations des Heartbreakers en concert, des interviews des proches de Thunders et les archives vidéo des New York Dolls par Bob Gruen. Parmi les interviews, celle de Dee Dee Ramone se distingue par la générosité de la parole et celle de sa mise en scène : le visage marqué, l'œil brillant et les tatouages du bassiste des Ramones découpés dans le noir. Kowalski n'arrache pas au gentil junkie de piquants secrets, il rend hommage à un héros, un survivant, sculpte son monument. Douze ans plus tard, lorsque Dee Dee meurt à son tour d'une overdose, l'interview fournit la trame d'un affectueux portrait, Hey is Dee Dee Home. Autant que les derniers feux du rock, la vie avec la dope est l'autre sujet des films jumeaux que sont Born to Lose et Hey is... On pense à The Daik Stuff, le livre de Nick Kent sur le sinistre "envers du rock" rongé par la drogue. Mais quand la chronique de Kent tourne parfois à la facile démythification, Kowalski ne distingue jamais l'envers de l'endroit. Il ne sépare pas les lâchetés des héroïsmes, ne juge personne, mais restitue comme personne l'énergie aujourd'hui éteinte, la vérité fiévreuse d'un monde perdu.

Winners and losers

The 2006 world cup football final made infamous by Zidane’s head butt to Materazzi presented a perfect opportunity for a unique film.
We hear the French and the Italian announcers but never see football players or action on the field. Instead we follow the action by watching French and Italian spectators watching the game. We are with them in Paris and Rome, in their homes, in cafes or in Stadiums.
They are the main characters.
They represent the two teams and are as important as the unseen stars on the field.
Each person watching the finale was, at least for the duration of the game, deeply nationalistic. Eyes gaze in anticipation. Every tic, every reaction reveals hope and dread. But the people we are watching are more than spectators. We are observing people being themselves. They are mirrors. We are watching ourselves. The film is about people as much as it is about football.
Today we know that Italy beat France but the people in Winners and Losers will live forever, waiting to the very last seconds of the game, hoping their side will win.
When the screen fades toblack, something stays with us,
something more profound than a football score.

Dans le film, on voit de jeunes punks s'amuser à reconnaître, au fil des pages d'un album illustré, Patti Smith, Iggy Pop ou The Ramones. Mais on est bien loin de New York, dans la région de Cracovie. Lech Kowalski, né à Londres de parents polonais ayant fui les camps soviétiques, a retrouvé avec «The Boot Factory» tout à la fois ses racines familiales et un mouvement underground aussi frais que celui qu'il avait connu vingt ans plus tôt à New York. C'est en allant pour la première fois dans son pays d'origine pour y montrer ses fIlms que Lech Kowalski rencontre Lukasz Siska, jeune punk qui s'extasie devant ses images des Sex Pistols et lui montre ses bottes, il les a faites lui-même. C'est le déclic et le début du tournage. Lukasz et ses copains fabriquent ce genre de hautes bottes qui chaussent les punks du monde entier, du modeste trois œillets au glorieux 14 œillets, en noir bien sûr, mais aussi dans des cuirs de couleurs. «Avant, elles venaient de Roumanie. On les appelait les roumounes. » Comme il y avait une «niche, les jeunes punks de Cracovie s'en sont emparés. Le marché est en train de se développer et touche désormais une clientèle beaucoup plus classique, comme le montre une scène où une jeune fille sage vient, accompagnée de sa mère, se choisir une paire de bottes de punk.
La fabrique est née dans un squat, une même pièce servant de dortoir, d'atelier et de salle des fêtes. La petite entreprise grandit. Les fêtes continuent, noyées dans la bière. Des chanteurs hurlent ce qu'ils sont encore capables de hurler dans des micros auxquels ils se raccrochent, l'œil vague. La musique accompagne d'ailleurs en permanence les journées de travail façon punk. Et tout en cousant le cuir, en collant les semelles- avec de mauvais masques à gaz pour se protéger des solvants -, on chante en chœur de puissants airs scatologiques, où il est question de relations pas du tout catholiques entre un sacristain et un marin. Lukasz et ses amis témoignent de leur difficulté à vivre dans une Pologne qu'ils disent minée par le népotisme, de leur destin de brebis galeuses. La fabrique de bottes leur permet de nier cette infortune. La première partie du documentaire se termine d'ailleurs sur le mariage de l'un d'eux, Piotr. Bottes bien cirées, look des grands jours, mairie, champagne et promesses. ..
Pour la seconde partie, six mois plus tard, Lech Kowalski abandonne le noir et blanc pour la couleur. Pourtant, la réalité n'est pas très rose. Piotr a eu un bébé, mais il doit, tout comme Wojtek, se battre contre l'emprise de l'héroïne. À la fin du documentaire, un carton annoncera que l'un est parti pour deux ans dans un camp de réintégration par le travail de l'autre côté de la Pologne, et que l'autre a eu un bébé avec une nouvelle fille de l'atelier. Pour faire face aux commandes, Lukasz embauche. Pas de discours économique dans le film de Kowalski. On n'apprendra rien sur la méthode de gestion de cette entreprise originale. La caméra montre simplement la vie de ces punks au plus près. Elle adopte le rythme anarchiste de leur existence, filme la main qui bat un rythme, celle qui enfonce le poinçon dans le cuir, les visages piercés. . . Et leurs bottes, beaux objets fétiches d'une culture de dérision.

C'est la chronique d'une petite fabrique un atelier-squat dans les faubourgs de Cracovie. Artisanalement, Lukasz, Piotr et Wojtek y confectionnent des grosses pompes façon Doc Martens made in Poland. Au fil des quatre saisons, la caméra a vécu à leur rythme : d'abord dans un noir et blanc " qui ex-prime la partie mythique de la vie de "l'entreprise' ; en couleur ensuite ‘pour montrer une autre réalité, celle des dysfonctionnements et des diffi-cultés de vivre’, explique le réalisateur. Résoudre l'équation « Implication dans la société et préservation de ses diffé-rences » n'a rien d'évident. Ou com-ment être à la fois dans et en dehors des normes, travailler pour gagner sa vie tout en continuant à écluser des litres de bière et à se shooter. Le cadre et le montage des images vibrent en accord avec la musique punk-rock qui envahit l'atelier le jour, et les fêtes la nuit. The Boot Factory est la rencontre punching-ball et compréhensive de deux cultures alternatives. Celle de jeunes Polonais qui tentent d'allier le sérieux et le destroy, et de Lech Kowalski, réalisateur anglais d'origine polonaise, américain d'adoption, devenu l'un des chefs de file du cinéma underground US.

Au début, on se dit : horreur, la vie des punks polonais de la grande banlieue de Cracovie, filmée en noir et blanc charbonneux et tournée caméra à l'épaule. Glauque. Et puis pas du tout. En assistant à une beuverie appuyée chez ces artisans-Oï qui se vautrent dans la néo-sauvagerie comme des cochons dans la fange, on a presque envie de baptiser ce film le "Scorpio Rising de la cordonnerie" — ces punks étant également des fabricants de rangers. Mais cette référence est finalement un peu déplacée, car on est loin des délires maniéristes de Kenneth Anger sur les Hells Angels new-yorkais des années 60. "Ma petite entreprise de Docs" serait finalement un titre plus approprié. Enfin bref, une fois accoutumé au tangage visuel, une fois qu'on a capté de quoi il retourne — ça prend du temps, il n'y a pas de commentaire explicatif—, on y prend goût, on s'attache à ces êtres frustes, ex-taulards, ex-drogués, qui vendent et fabriquent des croquenots orthopédiques dans . un pavillon de banlieue, en collant des semelles compensées avec une colle qu'ils pourraient sniffer, en écoutant à dont des hymnes punk-skin, en polonais dans le texte. C'est aussi ça, la force du cinéma : rendre humains et émouvants des êtres dont, a priori, nous n aurions pas une folle envie de faire la connaissance. Au-delà de leurs tatouages, leurs piercings, ces cordonniers marginaux sont d'ailleurs des artisans-prolos très conventionnels, qui n'omettent pas de se marier, de payer leurs traites, etc. Certes, ça déraille quand deux d'entre eux retombent dans la dope, et se font même taper sur les doigts par leur patron coiffé comme un Hun quand ils sont en retard au boulot, mais cet accoutrement, ces rustiques goûts musicaux sont finalement le reflet du monde dans lequel ils vivent. Eternelles années 70 grisâtres. Quant à la réalisation, elle est au diapason : antisophistiquée au possible. Un gage d'honnêteté et de vérité. On ne pige pas vraiment pourquoi le film passe sans crier gare à la couleur vers la fin. Mais est-ce bien grave, dans le fond ?

On y découvre, outre les live hystériques des Pistols menés par un Johnny Rotten au regard halluciné, les frémissements d'un mouvement mort-né, pris entre la fin des idéologies hippies et le cynisme consumériste des années 80.

Accompagnant le groupe de ville en ville, l'image tremblée et sale, soulignée par une bande-son impressionnante (The Clash, Sham 69, Dead Boys...), nous fait pénétrer dans l'intimité du groupe et de ses fans imbibés d'alcool. Il y a surtout cette scène dans une chambre d'hôtel, où Sid Vicious et Nancy Spungen, complètement défoncés, gisent sur le lit dans un état de délabrement qui semble annon-cer la fin tragique du couple quelques années plus tard.

Es gibt viel Footage erster (und hauptsächlich britischer) Punk Bands, die sehr weit von der American Tour der Pistols gedreht wurden, sowie Interviews mit anderen Figuren, die mit der frühren Punk-Szene in Verbindung gebracht werden. Die Sex Pistols kann man auf der Bühne sehen, wie sie vieles ihres klassischen, frühen Repertoires in Clubs und Konzerthallen im ganzen Süden sowie bei ihrer letzten Show in San Francisco zu ihrem Besten geben. Weitere einflussreiche Bands in diesem Film sind The Clash, The Dead Boys, The Rich Kids (mit Ex-Sex Pistol Glen Matlock), X-Ray Spex, Generation X und Sham 69. Außerdem gibt es umfassendes Interview-Footage mit Sid Vicious und seiner Freundin Nancy Spungen kurz vor ihrem gewaltsamen Tod, sowie Szenen aus dem kurzen Bestehen der gescheiterten britischen Pub Punk Band “Terry and the Idiots”. Entitled Masterclass Author’s Documentary the series of master classes present experienced filmmakers in dialogue with young talents to go in depth on filmic form and signature of a filmmaker. Concepts, camera directing and editing will each be addressed through exercises as well as discussion and analysis of exceptional documentaries.

East of Paradise is a new documentary film of one of the most significant contemporary representatives of the New York, so-called underground film - Lech Kowalski.
There are two main lines: one is Kowalski’s own memories of the birth of the punk rock scene in New York and often even surreal situations connected with them. In the hectically cut archive materials there appear various personalities of the underground and avant-garde art of the 70s. It is a kind of introductory collage to rebellion, psychedelic visions and attempts of artistic expression by alternative means. The second line is a contrast to this: memories of the director’s mother Maria Werla Kowalski, who really openly tells a dramatic story from the Soviet communistic gulag, where she was deported from Krakow after the “liberation” of Poland by the Red Army in 1945. The strong authenticity, natural speech and mimics of Mrs. Kowalska in relatively static views create an extraordinarily tense atmosphere and a strange tension at the same time in connection with the New York line.

While screening several films at an underground film festival in Krakow, Poland Lech met a Polish punk-rocker turned-entrepreneur Lukasz Siska. Lukasz ran the Cockney Underground Boot Factory that produced footwear made by some of the most hardened punks on the Polish scene. This intriguing film is the story of that factory and the people who work in it. Beautifully shot, you’ll be completely immersed in this splendid story of real life.
